Stripe: 2024 CNBC Disruptor 50

It hasn't emerged unscathed, seeing its private valuation cut sharply during the startup crash. Stripe was valued at $65 billion as of the tender offer it completed in February, an increase from its last private valuation of $50 billion – albeit still far from its high of $95 billion in 2021. In its annual letter published in March, Stripe revealed that it surpassed $1 trillion in total payment volume in 2023, up 25% from 2022. "Stripe's business is the healthiest it's ever been," president and co-founder John Collison told CNBC in April. Stripe says it's also benefiting from a new wave of optimism in Silicon Valley, even if it isn't primarily an AI company.

As the incident unfolded during the second set, with the tournament referee and a WTA supervisor stepping in to assess the situation, Osaka, who grew up idolizing Williams, kept her composure.

Rising interest rates crushed technology valuations and had a chilling effect on Silicon Valley. Stripe had to take a major haircut along with the rest of the industry as soaring inflation and rising interest rates, starting in 2022, pushed investors out of the riskiest assets, lifted borrowing costs and and forced startups to tighten their belts. "Valuations are a product of interest rates," Collison said. While many tech companies took a hit in 2022 and 2023, Collison said the rising interest rate environment succeeded in flushing out the "wackiest" startup ideas, leaving the best ones to get funded. He pointed to an "overfunding" of marginally good ideas, and "zombie companies" taking too long to go bust.

But while nearly two-thirds of Gen Z identify as happy, that percentage drops significantly as people in the age group right as they reach adulthood (ages 18 to 26). SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — One thunderous dunk provided a perfect snapshot of Anthony Edwards' second-half dominance Monday night. Edwards threw down a monster slam over John Collins of the Utah Jazz in the third quarter, helping the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 114-104 victory but leaving both players banged up after the play. Timberwolves veteran point guard Mike Conley said it might have been the best dunk he's ever witnessed in person. Edwards’ dunk gave a short-handed Minnesota team an emotional boost during a critical stretch. “He’s always been a guy who can really flip a game around,” Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said.

New York CNN —Wyze, a smart camera maker, said that some users last week saw footage from cameras that weren’t their own because of a security glitch. As Wyze worked to bring the cameras back, about 13,000 users “experienced a security issue” where they saw wrong thumbnails from other users in the Wyze app. About 1,500 users clicked on the tabs showing the other people’s footage, which enlarged the thumbnail and in some cases allowed people to view footage from other users cameras. Wyze is blaming the incident on “a third-party caching client library” that it began using in its system. It’s not the first security incident that has affected Wyze.

Confederate monuments bear what the anthropological theorist Michael Taussig would call a public secret: something that is privately known but collectively denied. Even Lee’s burial site at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. — where he served as president after the war — has changed. The university decided to focus on Lee the civilian rather than Lee the general, for example by moving a prominent portrait of him in uniform. That’s why the idea to melt Lee down, as violent as it might initially seem, struck me as so apt. Confederate monuments went up with rich, emotional ceremonies that created historical memory and solidified group identity.

China spent 1.4 trillion yuan ($191 billion) replacing foreign hardware and software in 2022, marking a year-on-year increase of 16.2%, according to IT research firm First New Voice. Two firms awarded the Harbin tenders were subsidiaries of China Electronics Corporation and China Electronics Technology Group Corporation - both heavily targeted by U.S. sanctions. The U.S. Department of Commerce, China Electronics Corporation and China Electronics Technology Group Corporation did not return requests for comment. Despite heavy spending on domestic substitution, however, foreign firms are still dominant suppliers for banking and telecoms database management. Non-Chinese companies held 90% of market share for banking database systems at the end of 2022, according to EqualOcean, a tech consultancy.
